Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

Overview

A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is a modern plant designed for the segregation, sorting, and recovery of valuable recyclables from mixed municipal solid waste (MSW), dry waste, or pre-segregated waste streams. MRFs play a crucial role in the circular economy by diverting waste away from landfills, recovering reusable materials, and ensuring that only inert residues are disposed.

Types of MRFs
  • Clean MRF
    • Processes source-separated recyclables (plastics, metals, glass, paper, etc.) collected from households and institutions.
  • Dirty MRF
    • Processes mixed MSW to extract recyclables before sending organic fractions to composting or biomethanation and rejects to landfill.

Process Flow

  • Waste Reception & Feeding
    • Waste is unloaded, inspected, and fed onto conveyors for uniform flow.
  • Primary Segregation
    • Manual or mechanical sorting to remove bulky items and hazardous contaminants.
  • Screening (Trommel / Disc Screen)
    • Separates waste into different size fractions for specialized processing
  • Air Density Separation (ADS / Wind Sifter)
    • Differentiates light fractions (plastics, paper) from heavy fractions (glass, stones, metals).
  • Magnetic & Eddy Current Separation
    • Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are recovered for recycling.
  • Optical / Sensor-Based Sorting (Optional)
    • High-tech systems to sort plastics (PET, HDPE, LDPE, etc.), paper grades, and other materials.
  • Baling & Storage
    • Recovered recyclables are compacted into bales for easy transportation to recycling industries.
  • Residual Disposal
    • Only minimal non-recyclable fraction is sent to landfill.
